Subscription Box Shipping - Things to Consider

Shipping is one aspect of a subscription box business that tends to surprise many. Shipping anything these days is expensive and we’ve been spoiled with fast delivery that really isn’t sustainable to the level many customers would like.

With that said, shipping your subscription box doesn’t have to eat into your profits. Let’s chat about what to consider when you’re tackling shipping your subscription box.

1.How heavy are the items you will be shipping?

The heavier your box weighs, the more money you will pay for shipping. As you’re sourcing products, pay close attention to the weight of the item and if it’s not listed, send the vendor an email or DM and ask. If the items you want to use for one month are over the box weight you’d like to stay at, then you can decide to pay the extra or save it for another month’s box that will allow you to stay within the shipping price range you desire.

2. The bigger the box, the bigger the shipping cost.

Bigger is not always better. If your subscription box requires a larger box, by all means, go for it. But if you are filling half your box up with crinkle cut, packing peanuts or bubble wrap, you’re spending a TON of money that you don’t need to. Ship more efficiently by making sure the box size is correct for items you’ll be including. If your box is too big, items will shift during shipping, possibly causing damage. If your box is too small, all your items will not fit and then you’ll be scrambling (and spending more money) to find a resolution. Decide on the box size and stick with it each month.

3. Will your box include fragile items that will require additional packaging materials?

Fragile items require additional packaging, which will take up real estate in your box and will add some weight.

4. Order samples of boxes from different vendors.

You’d be surprised how many different types of boxes are out there. Ordering samples from different vendors allows you to see, feel and test out each one. You’ll want to pay close attention to the thickness of the box. If you are shipping heavier items, you’ll want a box that is thicker and sturdier. Another benefit of ordering from multiple vendors is you will experience their customer service. Don’t discredit the role your box vendor plays, especially in the current supply chain climate, a vendor that is responsive and helpful makes all the difference.

5. You don’t have to use a box.

Don’t let it fool ya, you don’t even have to use a box for your subscription. For example, a t-shirt subscription definitely could use a branded polymailer. A sticker subscription could use a small bubble mailer. If that’s the route you want to go, check out my blog post 3 Women-Owned Packaging Supply Brands You Need to Know!
