The Importance of having ‘about us’ on your website
“So, tell us a little bit about yourself.”
Ugh, who else cringes at the sound of that question? It’s like, okay, what do you want to know?
While we may not like that question, just as it provides employers with valuable information that will lead to their hiring (or not) of you, sharing more about yourself on your website is also how you will connect with customers and clients. Additionally, the more your ideal customer feels connected to you, the more likely they are to buy your products or services. Too often, brands do not include an about us section (also known as ‘Our Story,’ ‘Mission’ or ‘Meet the Team’), nor give any insight to why they started their business. That is a HUGE missed opportunity to connect with current and potential customers.
People buy from others who are BLT – Believable, Likeable, and Trustworthy. Sharing who you are and why you started your business will help you become BLT. So, let’s get into some tips to help you share who you are!
Who are you?
What personal context would resonate with someone looking at your website? It’s so important to be authentic so if what you’re including isn’t indicative of who you are, leave it out. No one’s saying give out your social security number, but a couple of tidbits of personal information make you more human. Also, we live in an e-commerce world, and having some personalization will help set you apart from the competition. Just a handful of examples you could include are your name, marital status, children, pets, education, and hobbies. Now if your marital status has no relevance to your ideal audience, absolutely leave it out. For me though, it’s important that my clients know I’m a wife, mom, etc. because that is a commonality I have with a big chunk of my ideal demographic. If your brand is all about pets, there should be some awesome pictures and tidbits of the pets you have.
Why did you start your business and what problem does it solve? Let your passion come through here. This is where you can paint a picture of your story and highlight how your product or service can help solve a common problem your ideal customer faces. What does your product or service allow your ideal customer to do?
What are the benefits of your product or service? What sets you apart from your competitors? Have you been recognized by any organizations or awards? This is where you can brag a little! Be proud of what your brand stands for and has accomplished. Go a step further and add a picture of yourself and your team. Let your customers get to know you. You can also add a short video clip of yourself talking to your customers about your brand.
